A northeast Missouri man who was kneeling in the highway was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer early Tuesday.
It happened at 5:15 a.m. on Highway 19, three miles south of Perry, Mo., in Ralls County.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol identifies the victim as Melvin Hisel, 55, of Hannibal, Mo.
Troopers said Hisel was in the northbound lane of Highway 19 when the semi hit him.
Hisel was pronounced dead at the scene by Ralls County Coroner Robert VanWinkle.
VanWinkle told KTVO that Hisel had somehow gotten his car stuck along the highway about a mile from where he was struck.
The coroner said Hisel had a bad ankle and walked using a cane. VanWinkle said he had fallen down on the edge of the northbound lane, and another motorist tried to help move him off the highway.
Unfortunately, the tractor-trailer came along before the good Samaritan could get Hisel out of the way.
The big rig was driven by Mohamed Abdulrazik, 41, of Euless, Texas. He was not injured.
