Red Sox re-sign veteran relief pitcher Ryan Brasier to 1-year deal for 2022
The Boston Red Sox have avoided arbitration with one of their veteran relief pitchers, who will be under contract for the 2022 season.Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom announced Tuesday that the club agreed to a one-year contract with right-hander Ryan Brasier.Robert Murray of FanSided, who was the first to report about Brasier's contract agreement, says the deal is worth $1.4 million.Brasier, 34, has played in five major league seasons, including the past four with the Red Sox. This year, he posted a 1.50 earned run average in 13 relief appearances for Boston after missing the team's first 134 games due to injury.He did not allow a run over his final eight appearances of the 2021 season, spanning 7 2/3 innings. He pitched in seven postseason games, allowing eight hits and four earned runs in four innings, striking out five.Brasier was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Angles in 2007 and made his MLB debut with the Angels in May 2013. He did not appear in a major-league game during the 2014 season and was outrighted off LA's 40-man roster that October. He then spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons in the Oakland Athletics minor league system.In 2017, Brasier pitched for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league. The Red Sox then signed him to a minor-league contract in March 2018 and was called up to the big leagues in July. The Boston Red Sox have avoided arbitration with one of their veteran relief pitchers, who will be under contract for the 2022 season.
