Entertainment Weekly offers an exclusive look into The Matrix Resurrections with new photos of the film and behind-the-scenes making. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max December 22nd, 18 years after the original Matrix trilogy ended with The Matrix Revolutions in 2003.
The first is of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Morpheus holding red pill and a blue pill in his hand. It’s the iconic pivotal choice that Neo (Keanu Reeves) will have to make once again.
Neo defies gravity, seen drop-kicking Jonathan Groff’s suited character mid-air. The computer hacker, freed from the world of the Matrix, was last seen in Revolutions sacrificing himself to the A.I. machines who created the simulated reality to stop the human-machine war. Now, he finds himself back inside the Matrix with no memory of his past. Groff’s character has yet to be revealed, but he may be an Agent of the Matrix.
Carrie-Ann Moss returns as Trinity, Neo’s love and a member of Morpheus’ Nebuchadnezzar spaceship. She too seemed to have passed in Revolutions, but she’s seen again fighting alongside Neo in the Matrix. Here, a glitch starts to happen from the trailer.
Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones, Iron Fist) appears in Resurrections as Bugs, a blue-haired gun-fighter with a white rabbit tattoo. This is the same kind of tattoos Neo followed in 1999’s The Matrix to begin his journey towards enlightenment. Bugs finds herself in a similar position as Morpheus once did. She can only open the door for Neo, and he has to decide to walk through.
More fresh faces appear in this new film. Tony Onwumere (Sense8), worked with director Lana Wachowski on the sci-fi Netflix series, suits up with tech. He’s joined by Eréndira Ibarra, also from Sense8, who plays the character Lexy. Wachowski seems to like her Sense8 actors, in addition to bringing in Brian J. Smith and Max Riemelt.
There are also some behind-the-scenes shots of Wachowski who returns to helm Resurrections without her sister Lilly Wachowski. The pair directed the original trilogy together. And a shot under the cover of night for the new motorcycle scene had to be put into this Matrix Movie, with Moss’ Trinity and Reeves’ Neo in San Francisco.
