OT Rankings: Joe Alt

With the season underway players have had the opportunity to raise their stock and move up the rankings. Before we jump into Joe Alt, here’s a few reminders about the rankings themselves:

  • The rankings will be updated throughout the season.
  • Players who have not played college football are not eligible for the rankings.
  • Players are graded on their college ability, not their pro potential.
  • We are judging players on their film, production and physical tools.

You can view the College Football OT Rankings here.

Notre Dame offensive tackle, Joe Alt has been the stabilizer for the offensive line. Alt was not expected to play a key role as a true freshman, but earned more playing time each week until he took over the starting left tackle spot going into the Virginia Tech game. He provided steady play at the position and helped make the offensive line a strength instead of a liability. Notre Dame has allowed 11 sacks in seven games since Alt took over at left tackle compared to 22 in the five games prior. Alt has been a solidifying force for the Notre Dame offense and shows the potential to be one of the best tackles in college football.

Alt has an excellent frame for a tackle. He is 6’8″ 305 lbs and has the long arms needed to excel on the outside. Alt does not carry much bad weight and will continue to fill out nicely as he spends time in the weight program. He is already strong at the point of attack, but will be a dominating force once he is fully developed. With his excellent size and length, defensive ends will have a hard time going through or around Alt on the end of the offensive line.

To go with his excellent frame, Alt is a great athlete as well. He played quarterback, linebacker and tight end in high school before moving to the offensive line and has the quick feet and athletic movements that would be expected. Alt is downright nimble on the end of the offensive line and can handle the quickness of defensive ends that are trying to use speed to get past him. The athleticism is also a plus when Alt is blocking downfield, where he can square up quicker defenders to spring big plays for the ball carrier. With rare physical gifts Alt has a head start on most young offensive linemen trying to make their mark at the collegiate level.

Joe Alt is still relatively new to the offensive line and has plenty of work to do on his technique, but he is already an impressive player. He has the frame and athleticism that coaches salivate over and shows the work ethic to harness those tools. He has proven to be a quick learner who is picking up the nuances of the position while learning on the job. As Alt progresses he will become one of the best offensive linemen in college football.
