Another rock trio is in the works. Bob Vielma, bassist for the San Jose indie rock band Shinobu, has formed new group. Vielma sings and plays bass for the brand-new power trio Fuss, which also features Joyce Manor guitarist Chase Knobbe and Nick Aguilar, a drummer who’s been in bands like Slaughterhouse and Mike Watt’s Missingmen. Early next year, Fuss will release their debut album We’re Not Alone, which they recorded with producer Jeff Rosenstock.
Rosenstock himself has long career under his belt. In his past life, Rosenstock was the lead singer of the band Bomb the Music Industry!, who achieved cult status during the ska revival of the early 2000s. Since then, he’s made a name for himself as a solo artist, and as a producer. He’s worked on albums for the Smith Street Band and Laura Stevenson, and will now have a credit with Fuss.
The track “Teriyaki Dinner (Grown Ass Man Pt. II)” is an homage to early 2000s punk music, with lyrics and melodies to match. The lack-luster vocals longing to be taken seriously pair well with the consistent ska beats. “It’s always good to see you / I hope the next time that I see you / I’ll finally be a grown-ass man” punctuate a predictable song flow, but that’s kind of the point. It’s a solid first track from Fuss as we await the full-length record.
