A new indictment has been filed in the Hunt County capital murder case against Brooke Ashley Craig, who is accused of killing 7-year-old Kaden Green.

The indictment on a charge of capital murder of a child under 10 years of age was filed by the grand jury earlier this month. Assistant Hunt County District Attorney Jeff Kovach said the charge was intended to replace the previous indictment and would also include a lesser count of murder as County 2 of the charge, according to the Herald-Banner.

“It gives the jury the opportunity of returning a finding of felony murder,” Kovach said.

Jury selection is set in the 196th District Court for Feb. 7, 2022, and the trial is expected to begin at that time.

In 2017, Public Information Officer for Greenville Police Department Kathy Lucas said the shooting of Green happened Dec. 28, 2017, around 5 p.m. on Pickett Street.

“While checking the residence at 4211 Pickett, the surrounding area, and attempting to locate witnesses, a person came forward but did not report hearing gunshots,” Lucas said. “While responding officers were still on the scene, Greenville Police Department received a call from Hunt Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Room stating a person had brought in a 7-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the chest.”

At the time, Lucas said investigators believed 24-year-old Cameron Rafael Castillo had fought with his girlfriend, Craig, earlier and came back to the house on Pickett Street where the two argued a second time.

“Castillo exited the residence, entered his own vehicle, backed out of the driveway and headed east on Pickett,” Lucas said.

While Craig was leaving, witnesses said she came out of the home firing a gun into the vehicle, which held Castillo, his son, Kaden, and two other children. It was then that Kaden was shot in the chest.

Lucas said Castillo stopped the vehicle while Craig and an unnamed witness checked on the children.

“The witness took the child to the emergency room in another vehicle while Craig and Castillo fled the scene,” Lucas said.

Information on when and where the other two children in the car were taken into Child Protective Custody has not yet been released.

Kaden died shortly after being taken to the hospital. Castillo and Craig were arrested in a Walgreens parking lot by McKinney police officers. Both Greenville Police Department and Texas Rangers are investigating.
