Phoebe Bridgers just added another cover to her holiday collection: her version of Tom Waits’ “Day After Tomorrow,” with a classic Christmas song sung by Marcus Mumford, Z Berg, Blake Mills and more. The original track has more of a bluesy sound, with Wait’s raspy voice on top of a plucked acoustic guitar. Bridger’s cover places her more airy voice on top of piano and violins and adds some time with a chorus of “Silent Night” to make it a song for the holidays. Both versions, though, capture the longing that comes with missing people back home.
This cover will not only add to playlists but benefit an organization. According to Consequence, proceeds from the song will be donated to The International Institute of Los Angeles – The Local Integration & Family Empowerment Division, which works to help refugees, immigrants and survivors of human trafficking in Southern California.
Last year, Bridgers shared a cover of Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Through December,” and put the proceeds toward the Downtown Women’s Center in Los Angeles, charity benefitting homeless and previously homeless women. The indie artist frequently donates to causes she believes in: after a mishap at Austin City Limits, the organizers donated to Texas Abortion Funds, which Bridgers had publicly supported.
