OSHKOSH - The teenager accused of stabbing a school resource officer at Oshkosh West High School will not stand trial until next year.

Grant Fuhrman, 18, of Oshkosh, had been scheduled for trial in December, but now his case won't be tried until late May and early June, according to court records. His trial was postponed at a hearing Monday in Oshkosh.

Fuhrman was charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide after prosecutors accused him of attacking Michael Wissink, a school resource officer at Oshkosh West, with a two-pronged barbecue fork in December 2019. In response, Wissink shot Fuhrman, then a 16-year-old student at the school, in the chest.

The stabbing, along with the shooting, left the Oshkosh community stunned. Many students and staff at the school weren't sure what had happened when they heard gunshots and the school locked down shortly after 9 a.m. that morning. Some found hiding places in classrooms, while others were able to flee the school.

In late September, Winnebago County Judge Daniel Bissett agreed to suppress statements Fuhrman made to police from a hospital bed after the incident — meaning prosecutors can't use them against him at trial.

Then, in November, Fuhrman and his defense attorney, Corey Mehlos, asked Bissett to reconsider a request to move Fuhrman's trial out of Winnebago County or, alternatively, draw a jury from another county.

The next hearing in Fuhrman's case is scheduled for Dec. 16.
