Hilander Ice Rink Preparing for Season

Broomball teams wanted

The temperature has dropped, and the snow has started falling, which means it’s time to start thinking about lacing up your skates and broomball shoes.

Staff members at the Teresa K. Hilander Community Ice Rink in Sister Bay hope to be open as soon as it’s cold enough to make ice. The rink usually opens between Christmas and New Year’s Eve if the weather cooperates.

The rink offers open skating on the pleasure rink every night that the rink is open. There’s also room for pickup hockey, broomball and pond hockey inside the boards. Regular pickup hockey is played Friday and Monday nights at 6 pm. For the latest updates on hours and operations throughout the winter, visit the rink on Facebook at facebook.com/sisterbayicerink.

There’s no charge to use the rink. Skates and broomball and hockey equipment are available for rent for a small fee during normal operating hours in the warming house, where you can also purchase snacks, hot chocolate and rink gear.

There’s still time for businesses, individuals and organizations interested in supporting the rink to purchase ad space on the boards and inquire about sponsoring broomball teams for the 2022 season.

The rink is also home to the Northern Door Broomball League, and planning for the 2022 season is underway. The league plays every Wednesday night, with the full schedule announced in late December when teams are finalized.
