Tap & Mallet, a pioneering beer bar and gastropub in Rochester’s South Wedge, announced Monday it will close at the end of December after 14 years of business. The move comes amid a local beer scene changed by market forces and the coronavirus pandemic. Joe McBane, a native of Sheffield, England, who came to Rochester more than 20 years ago to work at the Old Toad on Alexander Street, co-founded Tap & Mallet with Casey Walpert. The two also own The Sheffield, which opened late last year near Brighton’s Twelve Corners. It will remain open, they said.

#StateofEmergency

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello declared a state of emergency Tuesday, citing concerns about a lack of hospital capacity as COVID cases surge in the region. Bello said he isn't prepared to impose sweeping countywide mandates but will implement some measures, including requiring masks to be worn in county buildings. He also said the county will provide 750,000 rapid test kits for residents to use before holiday gatherings. Officials from Rochester General Hospital and Strong said their facilities have reached full capacity and that the influx of COVID patients, the majority of whom are unvaccinated, has affected their ability to care for other patients.

#ParmaBurglaries

Five people were arrested and charged with stealing items — including three long guns — from several cars in Parma Monday morning, which led to brief lockdowns at three Hilton schools. Tinos S. McBride Jr., 19, Trevor D. Gulley, 18, and Trevon L. Burkett, 20, all of Rochester, were arraigned in Parma Town Court. They are charged with second-degree burglary, fourth-degree grand larceny and petit larceny and are being held at the Monroe County Jail on $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond. Two other males, also Rochester residents, were arrested on the same charges. A 17-year old appeared in Youth Court and was sent to the Onondaga Children’s Detention Center. A 15-year-old was released on an appearance ticket for Family Court for a later date.

See you Wednesday.
