MLB rumors: Mets’ Billy Eppler would consider signing former Yankees All-Star

New York Mets general manager Billy Eppler is wheeling and dealing in Queens.

Now this would be a Big Apple circus.

The New York Post’s Mike Puma reports “The Mets could be paying attention (Tuesday) to whether Gary Sanchez is tendered a contract by the Yankees. New GM Billy Eppler is connected to Sanchez from the NYY organization. Sanchez has at least been discussed - along with possible Tigers non-tender, LHP Matthew Boyd.”

New York Mets GM Billy Eppler is the king of Queens right now, after landing three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer Monday with a three-year, $130 million contract.

That’s on top of the trio of free agents Eppler signed on Friday, including former All-Star outfielder Starling Marte, who got a four-year, $78 million contract.

Eppler trained under New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman before heading to the Los Angeles Angels in 2015. Since returning to New York, Eppler has bumped Cashman from the back pages, wheeling and dealing with Steve Cohen’s money while the Yankees remain silent.

As for Sanchez, the two-time All-Star is coming off his third straight subpar season. Cashman has until 8 p.m. ET Tuesday to tender Sanchez a contract. Otherwise the 28-year-old will become a free agent.
