Mike Pence to raise money in New Hampshire for GOP legislators

Former Vice President Mike Pence is headed back to New Hampshire as Republicans eyeing a 2024 bid jockey for position in the key early primary states.

Pence is parachuting into Manchester on Dec. 8 to raise money for the Republican majority in the New Hampshire Senate, with tickets costing $500 per person or $1,000 for entry into a VIP reception. The former vice president visited the Granite State earlier this year to headline a party fundraiser, part of travel to early presidential primary states that also has taken him to Iowa and South Carolina.

Pence launched a political nonprofit organization after leaving the West Wing in January and recently began hosting a podcast.

These moves, and his busy travel and fundraising itinerary, are all part of his effort to prepare to wage a 2024 presidential campaign and mirror moves made by several of his would-be competitors, including Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, among others.

Former President Donald Trump may yet mount a third campaign for the White House in a bid for the second term President Joe Biden denied him last year. But Pence has signaled that he will make his 2024 decision irrespective of his former boss and may choose to challenge him in the Republican primary.

Trump and Pence were fast friends during the former president’s single term in office.

But Trump turned on his vice president after Pence refused to block certification of Biden’s Electoral College victory in Congress, a constitutionally questionable action that would have essentially overturned the will of the voters.

Their relationship has not recovered, with both men continuing to stand their ground regarding the decisions they made during the post-election period.
