One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Masslive.com’s Chris Cotillo reports the “Red Sox have signed infielder Rob Refsnyder to a minor-league deal. 30-year-old former Yankee spent 2021 with Twins, appeared in 51 games. Refsnyder played exclusively OF for Minnesota and has for some time ... was thinking back to his INF days in NY. Anyway, outfield depth for Boston. He gets a spring training invite.”
Refsnyder was a fifth-round pick of the Yankees in 2012. He made his MLB debut with the Yankees in 2015, and proceeded to play in 94 games over three seasons, hitting .241.
The Yankees traded Refnsyder to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2017 for outfielder Ryan McBroom.
Refsnyder then bounced from the Blue Jays to the Cleveland Indians to the Tampa Bay Rays to Arizona Diamondbacks to the Cincinnati Reds to the Texas Rangers and finally the Minnesota Twins.
He’s played in a total of 232 games over six MLB seasons, hitting .224.
As for the Red Sox, they are hoping to find more success with Yankees castoffs. Boston selected right-hander Garrett Whitlock from New York in last year’s Rule 5 Draft then traded for Yankees reliever Adam Ottavino.
Whitlock and Ottavino provided the Red Sox with a pair of high-leverage, late-inning arms in the bullpen which allowed Boston to advance to the American League Championship Series in 2021.
