Bowl projections: Michigan, Oklahoma State join College Football Playoff field

You wanted chaos? You got chaos.

Ohio State's surprising loss to Michigan coupled with Oklahoma's defeat at Oklahoma State knocked two perennial College Football Playoff contenders out of consideration and opened the door for two newcomers to walk through.

Much has been made of the dominance of four programs in the playoff era. Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Oklahoma have combined for 20 of the 28 possible appearances. Starting in 2015, there have been at least three of the quartet in every semifinal. It seems likely all four will miss this year.

Oklahoma State defensive end Collin Oliver (30) and defensive end Brock Martin (9) celebrate after defeating Oklahoma at Boone Pickens Stadium.

The Crimson Tide and Buckeyes falling out of the field in this week's bowl projections with the former still in contention for a playoff spot if they can beat Georgia in the SEC championship game. Michigan and Oklahoma State moved into the semifinal with the Bulldogs and Cincinnati holding their spots.

REAL PROBLEM:Kelly leaving Notre Dame to LSU is big issue for sport

ON THE RISE:Bonuses for college football coach this year at $8.4 million

More can change this weekend, however, and given the last couple weeks it wouldn't be a surprise. The Wolverines must beat Iowa in the Big Ten title game. The Cowboys face Baylor for the Big 12 championship. The Bearcats must beat Houston for the American Athletic title.

Waiting in the wings if there is an upset could be Notre Dame, though the Irish just lost coach Brian Kelly to LSU.

The rest of the bowl picture clarified on the penultimate weekend with 83 teams finishing 6-6 or better for the 82 available spots in the postseason. One team, unfortunately, will be left out.

Reminder: Some conferences may not fulfill their bowl allotment. Asterisks denote a replacement pick. Teams in bold have accepted berths.
