Spencer Rattler and Brian Kelly would make for an intriguing pairing over at LSU.

With Spencer Rattler transferring from Oklahoma after three seasons, it would be massive news in the college football landscape if he joined former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly at LSU.

While it was a foregone conclusion that Rattler was leaving Norman after losing the starting quarterback gig to Caleb Williams mid-season, nobody saw Kelly leaving South Bend anytime soon. Though there is a chance Rattler could follow his former Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley to USC, the potential pairing of Rattler and Kelly in Baton Rouge is too intriguing not to consider.

Here is why Kelly and Rattler joining forces on the Bayou Bengals would be good for both parties.

LSU football: Why Spencer Rattler joining forces with Brian Kelly makes sense

Even if Kelly is capable of winning a national title at LSU, it will take time for him to establish a firm recruiting base in the southeastern footprint. LSU might sell itself, but he is not going to build strong relationships with the Louisiana high schools coaches overnight. That is why he must be ultra-aggressive in the transfer portal right away. No player would be a bigger get than Rattler.

As far as Rattler is concerned, he may have spent three years in Norman, but technically has three years of eligibility left. He redshirted in 2019 and 2020 only counts if he wants it to because of COVID. Frankly, it would serve him to take a page out of Joe Burrow’s playbook and leave one college football blue-blood for another. Look at how those two LSU years changed Burrow’s life.

Rattler is in need of a rebrand. The former five-star coming out of Phoenix had an up-and-down three-year ride at Oklahoma. At times, he looked like a future NFL franchise quarterback. However, he was far too inconsistent to hold onto the job long-term with the Sooners. With him officially transferring, LSU just might be the best team he could potentially join in this offseason cycle.

Like Burrow, Rattler has to reinvent himself. Fortunately, LSU has the head coach now in Kelly and the recruiting base to make a serious run at a national title once again over the next few seasons. Again, this will take some time to marinate, but this potential pairing would send shockwaves throughout college football. Kelly with Rattler as his LSU quarterback changes the entire dynamic.

Nothing is guaranteed, but Rattler earning the job at LSU would bode well for all parties involved.
