Michael K. Williams had filmed much of the second season of his VICE TV docuseries Black Market when he died in September. Now, VICE has shared a trailer and release date for the new season, which arrives January 10 and marks some of Williams’ final on-camera work.
In Black Market, the actor interviews the people behind the underworld of illicit trades, from black market body modifications to how NYC’s secret world of boosting and flipping has shaped mainstream fashion. “Our goal is just to simply show the world a window as to why people do the things they do,” Williams says in the trailer. “As they say, when the system fails you, you create your own system.”
Season 2 comes five years after Black Market‘s first season, and mere months after Williams’ fatal overdose.
“While completing Black Market has been very difficult given the loss of Michael, it’s also been extremely rewarding to bring his vision for this season to the finish line,” executive producers Ben Freedman, Dion Sapp, Matthew Horowitz, David Laven, and Matt Goldman said in a joint statement provided to Decider. “Black Market was more than a TV show for Michael. It was a mirror to a life he lived. An everyday struggle to transcend life’s obstacles. That fight wasn’t always pretty but his documentary storytelling is a testament to the brilliance of everyday people making their way in a complicated world. We’re incredibly proud to be able to share this work with you.
