Casualty spoilers follow.

Casualty has confirmed that real-life couple Michael Stevenson and Lauren Crace are gearing up to play love interests on the show.

Ahead of its eagerly anticipated Christmas special this Saturday (December 4), the long-running medical drama revealed that Crace, who is married to Stevenson, will appear in the episode. In it, she'll play Chrissie, the HEMs partner of Stevenson's character Iain Dean.

Their romance looks to be short-lived, though, when they're called out to an RTC at a ravine and discover that a van has toppled over onto an unstable ledge that could collapse at any moment.

Desperate to help, Iain abseils down into the vehicle, all the while ignoring Chrissie's insistence that they wait for backup.

In the van, Iain finds Zamir and notices that he seems to be afraid of the driver, Peterson. Iain gets Zamir to a slightly safer place in the backseat and starts to treat Peterson, who opens up about his life as the husband of a refugee.

When Zamir objects to Peterson claiming he's married to his mum, Peterson loses his temper and launches himself at the youngster, which causes the truck to tumble down into the water below.

Crace is no stranger to the world of soaps, having briefly starred in EastEnders playing Danielle Jones, Joel Reynolds and Ronnie Mitchell's daughter, between 2008 and 2009. Since then, the 35 year old has appeared in outings such as Sherlock, Holby City, Doctors, Vanity Fair and Mr Selfridge.

Casualty airs on Saturdays on BBC One.
