Look: Brian Kelly Abruptly Leaves Notre Dame, Informs Players Over Text Message

Kelly coached at Cincinnati between 2006-09.

CINCINNATI — New LSU head football coach Brian Kelly isn't long for goodbyes when he moves on to a new job. Bearcat fans famously remember him bolting on UC in 2009, weeks before his undefeated team played against Florida in the 2010 Sugar Bowl. Cincinnati fell in that contest 51-24, a flat performance that many blamed on Kelly's departure.

The coach sent a text message to his Notre Dame players last night saying goodbye.

"Let me first apologize for the late night text and, more importantly, for not being able to share the news with you in person that I will be leaving Notre Dame," Kelly wrote to the team. "Our program is elite because of your hard work and commitment, and I know that will continue. I will share more in the morning when we meet."

That meeting convened at 7 a.m. ET on Tuesday and lasted less than 15 minutes. Kelly's quarterback at Cincinnati and All Bearcats contributor Tony Pike had fun with the situation.

Kelly and his new 10-year, $95 million deal are heading to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
