Free agent utility man Chris Taylor would seem to be a fit for the Red Sox, but it doesn’t appear the club is aggressively pursuing him.
Despite prior reports of Boston’s interest in Taylor, the Sox are not among the clubs aggressively pursuing him, according to a source familiar with the situation. In fact, it’s unclear if the Red Sox are even involved in the Taylor sweepstakes at all.
Taylor, 31, was an All-Star in 2021, hitting .254 with 20 homers, 73 RBIs and a .782 OPS in 148 games for the Dodgers. He appeared at six different positions (everywhere except catcher, first base and pitcher) but spent most of his time in center field (62 games) and second base (46 games). The Sox may consider additions at both positions, with Kiké Hernández’s versatility allowing them to be creative. So far, Boston has generally avoided the free agent frenzy sweeping through baseball, signing just one player (righty Michael Wacha) for $7 million.
Taylor might sign by Wednesday, when the collective bargaining agreement is set to expire and a work stoppage is expected to begin. According to reports, he has a robust market, with the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Mariners, Angels, Nationals, Marlins and Phillies all involved.
