The lighting of Harrisburg’s largest Menorah will take place at 4:30 p.m. today on the front steps of the Capitol in celebration of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights.

The event, sponsored by Chabad-Lubavitch, will feature musical entertainment, dancing, activities for children, Chanukah gifts, latkes and sufganiyot, traditional Chanukah delicacies.

The holiday, which lasts eight days and began on Sunday evening, commemorates the establishment of Freedom of Religion for Israelites. It contains a universal message for all faiths—that good will overpower evil, freedom will win over oppression and light over darkness.

The in-person celebration returns this annual tradition that was held last year but was absent the usual festivities due to concerns about large gatherings in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each night, another candle on the menorah will be lit.
