OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - This year some of the bells for the Salvation Army are silent and that is due to a low amount of volunteers to go out and ring the bells and take donations.

The shortage of volunteers also means the organization is short on its goal for the amount of money they raise this year.

Joel Arthur, the Envoy for the organization here in Ottumwa says they are at 14% and need to raise a total of $50,000. “We need people to help ring the bell for us to volunteer just those two-hour increments at one of our red kettles, and for people to really think about giving.”

The donations made go back into the town according to Arthur.

If you are worried about volunteering and getting sick, Arthur says you can still help them by making a donation on their website instead.
