Man Shoots His Mother Dead While She Drives Him Home for Thanksgiving—Police

A Michigan man allegedly fatally shot his mother while she drove them home following a Thanksgiving eve family dinner, according to police.

George Michael Harry II, 22, is alleged to have shot his mother Sonya Harry, 52, in the head at close range with a 9 mm pistol near the Pheasant Ridge-Royal Oak border on November 24, according to Fox 2.

Oakland County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) investigators said Harry then ran out of the car and opened fire into traffic, hitting three cars and wounding a woman who was driving past.

Harry had been a passenger in the rear seat of the Ford Edge when he allegedly fatally shot his mother, which then caused the car to crash, according to the outlet.

An OCSO news release obtained by Fox 2 said: "It came to rest in the middle of Woodward Avenue under the Interstate 696 interchange.

"George Harry got out and fired shots randomly at three other passing vehicles, including one in which an infant was riding. The car was struck, but no one in the infant's vehicle was hit."

A 43-year-old Ferndale woman was hit in the leg and was treated for her injury and later released from Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak.

Police said the motive for the fatal shooting "is not immediately known," according to the network.

Harry is set to be arraigned later on Tuesday on a murder charge, five counts of attempted murder and six counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony, Fox 2 reported.

Newsweek has contacted OCSO for comment.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, a database that collects information about shootings from across the U.S., 34 people have been killed so far in November in Michigan after receiving a firearm injury.

In a similar incident, police in Georgia said that a teenager stabbed his mother to death at her home on Thanksgiving Day. The mother, Marcia Chance, 42, was found dead after police were dispatched to a domestic-related assault in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

Varian Hibbert, 18, her son, was arrested and charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony.

And, in Dallas, Texas, a 15-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly shot and killed his own mother.

Officers launched an investigation on Friday after a 2-year-old girl was dropped off at her great-grandparents' home unexpectedly.

The great-grandparents didn't know who dropped off the child, and officers said the girl was supposed to be with her grandmother.

"The great-grandparents became concerned for the well-being of the child's grandmother and therefore requested a welfare check at the grandmother's home," officers said in an online post.

When they investigated the home, police found the body of Aime Salinas Alvarado, 47, who had died after being shot once in the head.
