Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and the Board of Apportionment unanimously approved the state's legislative redistricting maps Monday.
This approval comes after 30 days of public comment which garnered more than 800 submissions.
"Want everyone in the public to understand that we heard you," Hutchinson said. "We made some adjustments based upon the public comment."
Hutchinson noted a few changes like redrawing district nine in Springdale so it is now a majority voting age Latino district. The board also adjusted House districts four and five to make the city of Mountain Home whole.
However, the Democratic Party of Arkansas chairman thinks it's not enough, adding that they're taking the new maps to court.
"When Magnolia asked for the same types of changes, they did not," said chairman Grant Tennille. "We believe that these actions are deliberately taken along racial lines and won't stand court scrutiny."
After the maps were approved, democrat state representative Megan Godfrey in Springdale announced she will not seek reelection saying the redrawing of district 89 to split downtown Springdale and stretch into Benton County would not allow her to fully represent her constituents.
