HOLMDEL — Firefighters battled a house fire on Hillcrest Road Monday morning as it sent smoke over the nearby Garden State Parkway during rush hour.

The residents and their pet safely escaped the blaze, police said.

The fire was reported at 7:37 a.m. at 26 Hillcrest Road. The property backs up against the Parkway.

When Holmdel Patrolman Thomas Wilson pulled up to the house, he saw heavy smoke and flames billowing from the rear of the home, police said.

It is unclear how the residents, or how many, made it out of the burning building.

Where the fire started and the cause are still under investigation, police said.
