Suspect Killed After Opening Fire on Seekonk Police Identified

The man involved in the fatal police-involved shooting Sunday morning in Seekonk has been identified.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, the man has been identified as Jeffrey W. Groulx, 47, of New Hampshire. The D.A.’s Office said he also had ties to Boston. Groulx had also escaped from of a New Hampshire minimum-security prison in 2019 – in actuality a transitional work release halfway house – while serving time for armed robbery but was recaptured the following week. He was scheduled for a parole hearing in August 2020 but the results of that hearing could not be immediately found online, nor was it clear while he was not still in custody at the time of the incident.

Groulx was killed on Sunday morning when, according to the D.A.’s Office, he opened fire on Seekonk Police “with a 7.62 millimeter AK-47 model rifle” following a chase and after the vehicle he was driving had flipped on its side. The Massachusetts Medical Examiner’s Office determined Groulx was shot three times, with one shot being fatal, when police returned fire.

Police had been chasing Groulx after responding to a report of a break-in at a business on Route 6 in Seekonk at about 6:46 a.m. on the morning of November 28.

Officers arrived at the scene and spotted the suspect leaving the area on foot before locating him in the parking lot of another Route 6 business. According to the D.A.’s Office, the suspect fled from the parking lot in a black Honda heading east on Route 6. At the intersection of School Street and Route 6, he lost control of the car, struck a curb and rolled the vehicle onto the passenger side. When officers arrived at the scene of the crash, the suspect opened fire on them.

The D.A.’s Office said the investigation remains active and ongoing.
