TSA discovers loaded gun, ammunition in backpack of man from Maine at Logan Airport, authorities say

TSA in Boston discovered a 9mm gun in the bag of a man from Maine at Logan Airport on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Security at Boston’s Logan International Airport prevented a man from Maine from bringing a loaded gun onto a plane on the Friday after Thanksgiving, authorities said.

Transportation Security Administration officers in Boston detected the gun around 5:30 a.m. on Friday at the Terminal-B security checkpoint, authorities said. TSA immediately notified state police.

Authorities discovered a loaded 9mm with a round in the chamber, TSA said. Officers also discovered a a magazine containing seven rounds in the man’s backpack.

The man had an expired concealed firearms permit, authorities said. The man, who TSA didn’t publicly identify, was issued a summons by state police for illegal possession of a firearm.

Even with a valid permit, guns are not permitted to be carried through airport checkpoints.

The incident was the second gun discovered at Logan Airport during travel for Thanksgiving.

TSA officers also found a loaded .357 Magnum on Nov. 24. The loaded gun and five rounds were in the woman’s carry-on bag when she went through security,

TSA said its officers have now detected 17 firearms at BOS security checkpoints this year.

In 2019, TSA officers caught 18 firearms. In 2020, TSA stopped 11 firearms at Logan Airport’s security checkpoints.

“This just shows how vigilant our officers are,” Bob Allison, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Massachusetts, said in a statement. “They are always alert and never rest in their search to keep weapons from being carried onto flights.”
