Fear the Walking Dead spoilers follow.
Fear the Walking Dead's seventh season has amped up the rivalry between Morgan Jones and Victor Strand, but the spin-off series' latest episode 'The Portrait' saw their cold war turn hot.
Ahead of Fear's mid-season finale, co-showrunner Andrew Chambliss has explained how the "desperation" of Morgan led him to his recent betrayal – although he acknowledges Morgan's course of action perhaps wasn't the wisest.
'The Portrait' saw Morgan return to The Tower after Strand decided to leave Morgan, Grace, and Baby Mo to fend for themselves in the fallout earlier on in the season.

With Baby Mo sick and in need of medication, Morgan visited The Tower and was eventually granted access. However, any kind of truce between the pair was short-lived.
Strand soon collapses and it transpires he's been poisoned with Methylene Blue – and Morgan's the culprit.
Explaining the dynamic between Strand and Morgan – played by Colman Domingo and Lennie James, respectively – Andrew Chambliss discussed Morgan's lapse in judgement.
"Colman really got to embrace everything he has brought to the character," he began (via ComicBook.com). "On the other hand, we have Lennie, who is playing Morgan in a very desperate place."

Chambliss continued: "But as long as he is centred and in his right mind, he really does adhere to moral principles. But this episode sees him take a big step because he tries to take Strand's life when one could argue there are other ways to navigate that situation."
The conclusion of 'The Portrait' saw Morgan ultimately sentenced to death, but when Grace negotiates for Morgan's life from outside The Tower, Strand accepts her offer.

The catch? Morgan is banished from The Tower (again) and sent into the fallout, while Grace and Baby Mo live under Strand's rules in the not-so-safe haven.
Something's telling us this rivalry isn't over just yet.
Fear the Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US and on AMC UK in the UK.
