Postal Service holding weeklong job fair in Cincinnati
David Kimboe went to a job fair at the post office Monday saying he is too old for the cold.
He was there for an inside job.
It appears, workers can afford to be choosy these days.
"So, that right there would be the mail handler. It's telling you the duties," workforce planning specialist Lisa Butts said while walking Kimboe through the process on a computer.
She was set up in the lobby of the main post office in Queensgate for two hours beginning at 11 a.m.
Done with warehouse work, Kimboe's sights were set on the postal service even though his phone keeps ringing with offers of other opportunities.
"They're calling from everywhere," he related.
"Especially West Chester, Fairfield. I mean, $19 an hour and more. The job market is up as far as money. You don't have to settle for a $9 or $10 job no more."
It doesn't matter if you're thinking seasonal work, part-time or full-time.
According to a Postal Service news release, "The Postal Service in Cincinnati, OH is hosting a weeklong job fair to fill immediate openings for the positions of mailhandler assistants and city carrier assistants. Starting salary is between $16.87 and $18.92 per hour."
The competition for new hires is occurring in a very different environment.
"It used to be people just flooded to the post office and then we sorted through it," said William Rowe, the new Cincinnati postmaster. "Now we're having a little more difficult time getting people on board. But we're getting them hired."
When asked about the overall labor shortage these days, Rowe said, "I think it's tougher now to get people in because there's a lot of other folks that are giving incentives like a hiring incentive, that kind of thing. But our incentive is you're going to get in, you're going to be hired in for a great career and you'll be able to stay with us for the rest of your life."
If you are without computer access like Betty Smith, the postal service hiring team will let you use one of theirs.
They assured us there are enough workers to get your mailings there on time in December.
But they have immediate openings.
Peak season started two weeks earlier than it normally does.
"All of our jobs lead to a career if that's what you're interested in", a postal employee told Smith as he helped her navigate the initial process.
She was interested in sorting.
Anyone over the age of 18 can apply right there at the main post office all this week.
Kimboe was going home to complete the process, which included fingerprinting prospective employees on site and getting them right into the application.
"There's only a few places that I would take to be honest", he said.
"And this is one of them cause I live down here and it's convenient."
By Christmas, the Postal Service nationwide will have delivered 850 million packages and moved 12 billion pieces of mail.
To ensure it gets there on time, the postal service recommends retail ground by Dec. 15, cards by Dec. 17, priority mail by Dec. 18 and express mail no later than the Dec. 23.
