Kean taps Scharfenberger to run House campaign

Dan Scharfenberger will manage Tom Kean, Jr.’s campaign for Congress in New Jersey’s 7th district next year.

He served as political director of Kean’s 2020 campaign against Rep.  Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes).  Kean came within 1% of winning that race.

“I’m excited to be in this role in this pivotal race that will most certainly determine control of the U.S. House,” Scharfenberger said in an e-mail to party leaders.

Scharfenberger has emerged as one of the state’s top political operatives.  He worked on Bob Hugin’s U.S. Senate campaign in 2018 and as the executive director of the Senate Republican Majority campaign committee in 2021.  The GOP won expensive, hotly-contested Senate campaigns in the 2nd and 8th districts and wound up unseating the longest-serving legislative leader in state history, Senate President Steve Sweeney.

Kean’s 2020 campaign manager, Theresa Winegar, is now the regional political director of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).
