HONG KONG (TND) - CNN and various other outlets are reporting that an episode of "The Simpsons" featuring a joke about Tiananmen Square has been removed from Disney+ in Hong Kong.
The 12th episode of Season 16, titled "Goo Goo Gai Pan", has the iconic American cartoon family traveling to China to adopt a baby.
The characters stop by Beijing's Tiananmen Square, where they see a sign saying: "On this site, in 1989, nothing happened."
The comedic jab, funnily enough, is a joke about censorship from Chinese officials when it comes to Tiananmen Square.
In 1989 at Tiananmen Square, Chinese troops killed and arrested "thousands" of pro-democracy protestors who had been occupying the area for weeks, according to History.com.
The event is infamously known as the "Tiananmen Square Massacre" and is often censored, if not outright ignored, by Chinese leaders.
"China has regularly censored media, and companies that operate within the country are forced to censor search results for Chinese users — particularly images and information about the Tiananmen Square protests and the killings that ensued," reports CNN. "The Chinese government has worked hard to restrict images and reports of the 1989 event, considering it a threat to the legitimacy of its continued one-party rule."
The National Desk has reached out to Disney for comment on the removed episode, but did not hear back before publication. This article will be updated if and when a comment is provided.
