Seahawks Week 12 opposing QB preview: Washington's Taylor Heinicke

The Seattle Seahawks are back for most likely their final primetime game of the season. They will take on the Washington Football Team on Monday Night Football and their quarterback Taylor Heinicke.

Believe it or not, Heinicke has been in the NFL since 2015. After bouncing around the league as a backup or a member of the practice squad for a few years, Heinicke’s first start came in Week 16 of the 2018 season for Carolina, which resulted in a loss.

For over a year Heinicke didn’t see anymore action, either with an NFL team or the XFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks. However, Heinicke’s ship finally came as he got his first official start in the Wild Card round of the 2020 playoffs for Washington. Heinicke became somewhat of an internet sensation when he gave the eventual Super Bowl champion Buccaneers their toughest fight in the postseason.

This year, Heinicke has seized another window of opportunity. Since Ryan Fitzpatrick’s hip injury sustained in Week 1, Heinicke has been WFT’s starter. It has been somewhat of a yo-yo year for him. Overall he has 15 touchdown passes, nine interceptions and 1,928 passing yards.

On his very-best days, Heinicke’s style is somewhat similar to former Packers legend Brett Favre. Unfortunately, having Favre for a comp is somewhat of a double-edged sword. Like Favre, Heinicke is a gunslinger who isn’t afraid to let a pass rip even when he really shouldn’t. His arm is also not what Favre’s was at its peak.

Overall, Heinicke is a capable starter but he’s a step down from the QBs the Seahawks have faced lately. Monday night should be a prime opportunity for Seattle to get back on track defensively.
