REDMOND, Wash. – A Redmond company is playing a key role in NASA’s attempt to alter the course of an asteroid.
Joe Cassady with Aerojet Rocketdyne tells KIRO News that the goal is to protect earth from a devastating collision.
“We know what happened to the dinosaurs and obviously we want to avoid that,” said Cassady. “We’re going to smack into it with the spacecraft at about 15,000 miles an hour.”
The asteroid that they’re targeting doesn’t pose any danger to earth but the experiment is aimed at gaining the technology to direct a potentially devastating asteroid away from our planet in the future.
