Before the game on Sunday night, the Chicago Blackhawks celebrated Hockey Fights Cancer night at the United Center. They had special hockey sweaters to wear during the pregame warmups sporting the purple that is used to spread cancer awareness and they looked glorious. It is special to honor those fighting this terrible disease

Of course, Eddie Olczyk fought cancer hard and Troy Murray is in the middle of a battle. The Hawks broadcast on television and radio are better for having those guys through the years so seeing them honored and celebrated on a night like this was truly heartwarming.

Unfortunately, the game wasn’t as heartwarming. The Blackhawks had a sweet win over the St. Louis Blues on Friday but they didn’t have such luck in this game against the Sharks. San Jose shut them out on the back of their goaltender James Reimer who made 29 saves on 29 shots.

It was a brilliant performance by him for his first shutout of the season. Timo Meier scored a goal in the second period for San Jose which stood as the game-winner. He also added an empty-net goal to give San Jose the 2-0 win. Their captain, Logan Couture, assisted on both of the goals scored.

The Chicago Blackhawks were shut out by the San Jose Sharks on Sunday.

As good as things have been since Derek King took over for Jeremy Colliton, the Hawks are in a major hole in terms of the standings that is going to be hard to make up. If they would have scored one goal in regulation, they would have had a chance to win this game so that makes this loss tough. There is a lot of hockey left obviously but these are the types of games they need to win if they want to make it to the postseason.

One player who deserves praise from this game is Marc-Andre Fleury. He was named the second star of the game despite his team’s loss. He only allowed one goal on 20 shots against him which is very good. Normally, Fleury wins games that he only allows one.

The Blackhawks just concluded a homestand with these games against the Blues and Sharks. It was also their last game in November as their next match will come on Thursday against the Washington Capitals.

It begins a three-game east coast trip that goes through D.C. and both New York teams. There is no doubt that this will be a tough trip for them so hopefully, they have a good week of rest and practice before heading out east. They need to put this Sharks disaster in the rearview mirror and move on.
