Sony seems to be moving and shaking to create a mobile compatible PlayStation controller, suggesting that it is hoping to reveal some mobile ports in the near future.

“We have been thinking about how players enjoy our content and have had some early success with experimenting with mobile games and apps to provide more choice to gamers,” said Jim Ryan, the head honcho of PlayStation, earlier this year. “Mobile is just one of the areas we are exploring to reach millions of gamers beyond our platforms.

“PlayStation has a huge catalogue of diverse first-party IP that can transition to smartphone gaming and complement our AAA games or live service games. We are exploring the mobile market with some wonderful PlayStation franchises so please stay tuned,” he continued, and this new patent is evidence that the company is pushing swiftly onwards with this initiative.

Offering former first-party exclusives to alternate platforms is not a surprise given the success that Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn have seen on PC. God Of War is also slated to hop over to PC in 2022, and while players do have a lot to look forward to on the PlayStation 5, it’s clear that the higher ups are aiming to shift the historic position that the company has had for its spenny exclusives.

The patent diagram (cheers VGC for the spot) looks to depict a DualShock 4 controller, not a DualSense, and seems to have two separate components — “a left side grip portion and a right side grip portion gripped by the left and right hands of the user.” And, it also features "a shaft portion that can be tilted by the user, and detect the tilting direction and tilting amount of the shaft portion."

It’s not known how the controller will connect to the device but PlayStation controllers are already able to connect to mobiles with Bluetooth features. Ergo, it’s possible that it will again opt for this method, though one would hope that it would be wired in some way for the most efficient experience.

Naturally, there isn’t an expected timeline for when this product would land on the market, but Ryan did say that the idea was to launch some of its games on mobile by the end of the financial year. “That will not provide a significant profit flow, but we do anticipate that as we learn from that experience, and as we increase the number of titles that we publish on mobile, the contribution from both PC and mobile will start to become steadily more important as time passes,” he qualified.
