Scotty Olsen provided quite the spark for the Buccaneer offense draining four three-pointers in the second half to lead Beloit to an 81-73 win over Finlandia University Sunday afternoon in Flood Arena.
The first half went back-and-forth with the Lions registering the largest lead in the half taking a 35-28 advantage with just over three minutes to play in the period. From that point,
Azeez Ganiyu took over for the Buc offense hammering down low. The power forward made a layup, hauled in a defensive board and was rewarded on the other end with another layin to cut the lead to three in a minutes worth of work.
Mylan Walters hit three free throws over the next minute to knot the game 35-35 with just over a minute before the break.
Finlandia responded with a four-point spurt but Walters sent Beloit into the intermission down two after going the distance of the court for a last second layin to make it 40-38.
Brian Rusch and Ganiyu led the Bucs with ten points each in the first half combining to go 7-9 from the floor and 6-10 from the charity stripe.
Olsen took over in the second half nailing a triple in the Bucs' first offensive set piece after Ganiyu extended the possession with an offensive board and tallied the assist. Olsen jumped a passing lane and found Rusch up ahead for a fastbreak layin just seconds later. The three combined once again for more points on the next series with Ganiyu pulling down a defensive rebound, Rusch hauling in the board aon his own miss and finding Olsen beyond the arc for another three-pointer. The next set had Walters grabbing the board and finding Olsen camped behind the three-point line for another triple to make it 11 straight points for the Bucs, a 49-40 Beloit lead and less than two minutes had ticked off the clock.
The teams traded small runs with the largest lead held by Beloit, 60-48, at the 14:21 mark. Finlandia put the pressure on narrowing the gap to five, 76-71, with just over two minutes to go but the Bucs responded, continuing to light it up from downtown with a Rusch three that gave the Bucs a cushion.
Olsen led all players with 21 points after posting 13 bolstered by 4-5 from beyond the arc in the second half. He added a team-high three assists and four steals. Rusch ended up with 17 points hitting half of his shots from behind the three-point line in the game. Ganiyu was a perfect 5-5 from the floor en route to 14 points.
