The Biden Administration may reinstate the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy this week according to senior Biden Administration officials.
As first reported by Axios, the Biden Administration will reinstate the Trump-Era ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy also known as Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) in the upcoming days.
The policy would require asylum seekers to await their U.S court hearings in Mexico.
The Biden Administration had terminated the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy months after President Biden took office; however a federal Texas judge ruled the administration was required to bring the program back.
One difference between the Biden Administration compared to the Trump Administration is that the Biden Administration will offer asylum seekers the option to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
As to when asylum seekers could receive a COVID-19 vaccine is still unclear.
Once cleared by the courts, the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy will first be reinstated in:
- El Paso, Texas
- Brownsville, Texas
- San Diego, California
Whether the policy can be reinstated will depend on the Mexican government agreeing to accept back asylum seekers.
