MLB rumors: All-Star pitcher and potential Yankees trade target is back on the market

The Cincinnati Reds are shopping starting pitcher Luis Castillo.

And we’re back. Again.

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reports that per sources, “#Angels and #Reds have had preliminary trade talks on a Luis Castillo deal, but the price remains very high and the sides are far apart as of today.”

UPDATE (8:50 a.m.): MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reports that per sources, “Multiple #MLB teams have had recent trade discussions with #Reds about their starting pitchers. Tyler Mahle and Sonny Gray are available. Luis Castillo is, too, but has a very high price tag.”

Just last week, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that “The Reds’ Luis Castillo and Rockies’ Germán Márquez are doubtful to be moved, sources say.”

However two weeks ago, Morosi reported “Castillo, who had a 2.73 ERA from June 1 onward, already is drawing interest from teams across @MLB. The Reds are willing to engage in talks on the 28-year-old, who will be eligible for free agency after ‘23. ... The #Mariners are among the teams to check in with the #Reds on right-hander Luis Castillo.”

One year ago, Castillo’s name landed on Brian Cashman’s radar, with The Athletic’s Jim Bowden reporting on the existence of trade talks between New York and Cincinnati as the Yankees general manager worked to finalize a deal with DJ LeMahieu. Bowden’s report also came just hours before the Yankees signed Corey Kluber.

At the time, outfielder Clint Frazier and third baseman/outfielder Miguel Andujar were rumored to be key pieces of a potential deal between the Yankees and Reds. On top of that, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported the Reds asked for shortstop Gleyber Torres in Castillo trade talks.

Yes, Castillo is coming off a down season, compiling an MLB-worst 16 losses in 2021. But he had a 3.98 ERA in 33 starts and the 2019 All-Star remains under team control through 2023, according to Spotrac.
