Matías Soulé set to be given chance in Federico Chiesa’s absence

Juventus Under-23’s star Matías Soulé is set to be given a chance to shine in Massimiliano Allegri’s first-team amid Federico Chiesa’s absence.

Chiesa picked up a hamstring injury in Juve’s 1-0 defeat to Atalanta on Saturday and is likely to spend the rest of the year on the sidelines. The Bianconeri, who are now seven points off the top four after Saturday’s defeat, still have five Serie A fixtures before the winter break as well as their final group game in the Champions League.

Next up for Allegri and his men is a trip to Salernitana on Tuesday night and, according to various reports, Soulé is poised to make the squad as a replacement for Chiesa.

Soulé has shone for Juventus’ Under-23’s this season

18-year-old Soulé impressed during pre-season for Juventus but is yet to make his competitive debut for the Bianconeri. The winger was named on the bench for the 2-1 defeat away at Napoli back in September, but he didn’t enter proceedings.

Then, despite spending the entire campaign thus far in Juve’s Under-23’s, Soulé received a shock call-up to the Argentina national team earlier this month. The teenager is certainly one of the club’s brightest academy prospects and his recent finish in the UEFA Youth League against Chelsea did the rounds across Juventus Twitter, with many clamouring for his introduction into the senior set-up.

Soulé’s strike against Chelsea was one of five in all competitions this season.

Allegri demands Soulé to train with the first-team on Monday

It appears that Chiesa’s injury has finally forced Allegri into action regarding the talented Soulé. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport’s Giovanni Albanese, the Juve boss has requested the young Argentine to start training with the senior squad ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Salernitana.

The winger was in action for the Under-23’s on Sunday but was brought off at half-time. After the game, coach Lamberto Zauli said (via @BianconeriZone): “It was a conservative sub, he’s in the first-team squad now.”

While this is a positive step in regards to Allegri’s trusting of youth, we shouldn’t expect to see much of the young Argentine despite Chiesa’s absence. Young Kaio Jorge has been involved in the first team since joining the club in the summer but he’s barely seen the field. Dejan Kulusevski is another youngster who hasn’t garnered the trust of the pragmatic, traditional boss.

Could the gifted Soulé be an anomaly? We certainly hope so.
