Bruins Get Back on Track, Earn Victory over St. John’s

Estero, Fla. – UCLA (4-2) got back on track with a victory over St. John's (3-4), finishing up the Gulf Coast Showcase with a 73-65 win over the Red Storm.
Charisma Osborne scored 18 of her 19 points in the first half and secured 11 rebounds for her seventh-career double-double. IImar'I Thomas also put up 19 on an efficient scoring morning, going 8-for13 from the field.
Osborne scored the Bruins' first eight points of the game as UCLA took an early 8-5 lead (7:41). Danielle Patterson connected on a corner three to cut UCLA's lead to one, but the Bruins answered with a quick 8-0 run to make it 17-8 with under four minutes to play in the opening frame. The teams exchanged baskets and UCLA went into the second quarter with a 21-14 lead.
The teams exchanged triples before Osborne found Dominique Onu on a slick behind-the-back pass in transition to push UCLA's lead to nine. Osborne then knocked down her fourth triple of the morning, making it 29-17 and forcing a timeout from the St. John's bench (7:47). It was 31-22 before Camree Clegg finished a strong drive in the paint, but Onu answered right back with a corner triple (34-24). St. John's later rattled off an 8-1 run to make it 35-32 at the 3:29 mark. Natalie Chou connected on a short jumper and Jaelynn Penn hit two free throws to send the Bruins into the break with a 39-32 lead.

The Red Storm continued to battle and posted an 8-0 run, tying the game at 42 to force a UCLA timeout with 7:15 to play in the third quarter. The Bruins answered with a 6-0 run of their own, taking a 48-42 lead. The teams were knotted at 50 late in the third when Chantel Horvat glided across the baseline and scored on a reverse layup, putting the Bruins back up two. UCLA would take a 56-53 lead into the fourth.
Leilani Correa connected on a runner in the paint to make it 56-55, Bruins. The game was tied at 57 when UCLA rattled off a quick 4-0 run, but Danielle Cosgrove responded with a three-point play for the Red Storm (61-60). It was 63-63 when Thomas scored inside off a soaring offensive rebound from Kayla Owens (4:11). Thomas notched a pair of buckets down the stretch and the Bruins earned the victory, 73-65.
