As the coronavirus pandemic kept us at home, some people learned the importance of being able to effectively use the internet in a household suddenly full of more devices than usual.

Think for a moment of your home as an airport and all your internet-connected electronics as planes. Someone has to manage all the communication and keep things moving.

At an actual airport, that’s an air traffic controller. At home, this kind of work is typically done by a wireless router, the technology that turns wired internet service from a cable or phone company into our much-needed Wi-Fi and allows everything to be online without a mess of cables.

We have continued to gain appreciation for our hard-working routers according to a new report from J.D. Power, which found overall customer satisfaction with wireless routers increased from 844 points in 2021 to 852 points this year (scores are out of 1,000).

The factors involved in those scores were, in order of importance: Wi-Fi range; reliability; speed of upload/download; restoring connection easily; security capabilities; price; ease of set-up; variety of features; intuitive user interface; and customer service.

In addition to the overall ranking, J.D. Power calculated which wireless router brands consumers ranked best. Here are the top three most satisfying brands and their scores:

  1. Asus (883)
  2. TP-Link (875)
  3. Netgear (854)

All of these brands beat the industry average of 852. Linksys, Motorola and Arris, three other major brands, were considered below average.

The report’s findings are based on a survey of 1,059 current router owners who purchased their devices in the 12 months before the survey.
