Free-agent pitcher Jon Gray has signed with the Texas Rangers. He has received a four-year, $56 million deal with the team.
This will be his second MLB team. Before joining the Rangers, he played for the Colorado Rockies.
The Rockies previously offered Gray a three-to-four-year deal worth in the neighborhood of $35-40 million. He turned down the offer.
He was one of the best starting pitchers in the history of Coors Field.
“We made what we believed was a good-and-fair offer and Jon and his representation decided to go in a different direction,” Rockies GM Bill Schmidt said.
Gray joins a rotation that is expected to feature Dane Dunning, Taylor Hearn, A.J. Alexy, and Spencer Howard.
All five pitchers came to the Rangers. Dunning, Hearn, Alexy, and Howard were acquired in trades.
The 30-year-old has gone 53-49 as a starter. He has a 4.59 ERA in 152 games, including 151 starters.
He has one game finished, one complete game, and one shutout. Gray had 451 runs, including 423 earned runs, on 830 hits over 829 innings.
This past season, the 6-foot-4 right-hander went 8-12 overall in 29 starts. He allowed 83 runs, including 76 earned runs, on 140 hits over 149 innings.
His last appearance with the Rockies came in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on October 1st. He went four innings and allowed seven earned runs on seven hits to close out the season.
According to Baseball-Reference, he is projected to go 8-10 during the 2022 season. They believe he will have a 4.53 ERA with one save in 145 innings.
