We’re closing in on the end of Michelle Young’s journey for love and it’s officially time to talk about Rodney “Can’t Identify Different Types of Apples” Mathews. Rodney wasn’t the kind of contestant who necessarily seemed destined to go deep into the game on night one, but his and Michelle’s connection has been obvious as the season progressed. Here’s everything you need to know about Rodney (there *are* some spoilers ahead, so proceed with caution if you’re a purist).

Rodney is a sales rep from California

This 29-year-old teddy bear of a human works as a sales rep and resides in Rancho Cucamonga in Southern California. This *could* be seen as a strike against him in the race to become Mr. Michelle Young, depending on his feelings about moving (Michelle, who is a dedicated teacher in Minnesota, doesn’t seem super interested in uprooting her life to move to a new state).

According to Rodney’s official ABC Bachelorette bio, “sales rep” was not his dream job. Also, the dream of finding The One seems much higher on his prio list than anything to do with his career.

“After his dreams of playing in the NFL were shattered by a career-ending injury, Rodney picked himself up and redirected his ambition,” the bio reads. “He has a great job he enjoys, but he says life would be better if there was someone he loved waiting for him at home every night.”

Rodney is a former football player

Before an injury forced him to reevaluate his life goals list, Rodney played football for California State University, Fresno. He played from 2013 until he graduated in 2015, according to Us Weekly.

After college, he’s stayed involved in the sport, though, as a high school football coach (working with students=another thing he and Michelle have in common).

“Sadly, our season is over and it went by too fast, but I’m still very proud of our kids and thankful for Coach Hile for giving me this opportunity,” he wrote of working with Claremont High School’s varsity football coach, Shane Hile in 2017. “Can’t wait for next season 🐺 #CoachRod #OnePack.”

Rodney is a human ball of sunshine

The very first line of Rodney’s official ABC bio reads, “Rodney is a glass-half-full kind of guy,” and, honestly, that’s one of the most accurate statements we’ve ever read in an official Bachelor/Bachelorette bio. One thing that has shone through about Rodney all season long is his upbeat, positive attitude toward, well, pretty much everything.

Rodney’s ideal partner is honest, active, and a “former student athlete”—aka Michelle Young

Based on Rodney’s bio, ABC did a great job playing matchmaker when it came to pairing him with a Bachelorette to woo. His ideal life mate is “someone who is honest, active and ideally a former student athlete like himself.” Umm, that’s pretty much an EXACT description of Michelle, so cool.

For the record, the rest of Rodney’s soul mate wish list is also v Michelle:

“He wants to find a deep mental connection with someone but also wants a woman who he can laugh with every day. Rodney knows exactly what he wants and he is looking for someone who has that clear vision too—he’s done wasting time and is ready to be wifed-up!”

Rodney is super close with his family

Family is a top priority for Rodney, just like it is for Michelle. He doesn’t post a ton on Instagram, but when he does post, he love to give shout-outs to his fam.

Since (spoilers coming atcha) Rodney has officially made it to hometown week, we can only assume his family’s opinions of Michelle will be super important to him.

Rodney is a fan favorite with future Bachelor lead potential

Sadly, Rodney is reportedly not the winner of Michelle’s heart. According to Reality Steve, Nate Olukoya wins the season and Brandon Jones is her runner-up. While we know that Rodney isn’t the *next* Bachelor (that honor is going, somewhat inexplicably, to Clayton Echard), he has the kind of strong fan fave support that could earn him a shot at the lead in a future season (or at very least an invitation to Bachelor in Paradise).
