Spider-Man is joining MARVEL's Avengers tomorrow, and his web-slinging antics will now become part of the chaos. In Crystal Dynamics' game, new heroes are added as DLC content, giving players new ways to play and gameplay to explore. Here's everything you need to know about MARVEL's Avengers Spider-Man DLC content.

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man as new MARVEL's Avengers DLC

Spider-Man joins MARVEL's Avengers roster on November 30, 2021. This makes him the tenth playable character in the game, and the fourth DLC character to be released since launch. Spider-Man was promised to PlayStation owners when the game was first announced, way back in E3 2019. Back then, Crystal Dynamics promised Spider-Man as an exclusive character coming for PlayStation owners. It used to feel like a fantastic incentive to purchase the game on a PlayStation console, but today, it doesn't feel like that at all. Instead, players who are playing the game on anything but the PlayStation feel like they are missing out.

Given the game's relationship with its community – that of frustration and disappointment – it's understandable how what used to be seen as a cool exclusive bonus is now seen as a missed opportunity to make amends with the community. Still, SQUARE ENIX and Crystal Dynamics are not making any moves to reverse this situation. Perhaps in the future, they can still make Spider-Man available to other players, even as a purchasable DLC, rather than completely locking him out of non-PlayStation players.

What's in the MARVEL's Avengers Spider-Man DLC?

The MARVEL's Avengers Spider-Man DLC will contain the Spider-Man character, free-of-charge for PlayStation players. Various media previews, like the ones from IGN‘s, already give us a good impression of how Spider-Man will play like. Of course, Spider-Man will be using his web-slinging superpowers to take down their foes. His web shooters can web down enemies and let other members of the party take them down. Thus, Spider-Man plays more like a support character, rather than a damage dealer.

One (among a few) disappointments on Spider-Man's design, however, is his maneuverability. He moves clunkily, just like how the rest of the cast of characters are. His web-slinging to go from one place to another is not as good as the one made by Insomniac for the Spider-Man games, but it still works for the purpose it needs to serve.

With Great Power Event

The biggest disappointment in MARVEL's Avengers Spider-Man DLC is the lack of a new campaign for Peter Parker. Instead, there will just be a “With Great Power” event, an unfolding story that is told through unlockable challenges within the Avengers Initiative mode. According to Crystal Dynamics' blog post:

“You’ll experience Spider-Man’s story through unlockable challenges woven throughout the Avengers Initiative. Here’s a quick taste of his journey in Marvel’s Avengers! Peter Parker uncovers AIM’s new plan to acquire technology that could make their Synthoid army unstoppable and total domination inevitable. He must partner with the Avengers to stop this looming threat, and forms a tentative friendship with Ms. Marvel and Black Widow while keeping his identity hidden. As a Hero accustomed to working solo, he struggles with the new dynamics of working with a team. Will he join up full time with the Avengers, or stay independent in his fight against AIM?”

It may be disappointing that the MARVEL's Avengers Spider-Man DLC will not have its entirely new campaign. We guess we'll just have to wait for Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 instead if we want a new story.

How to get Spider-Man in MARVEL's Avengers

Spider-Man DLC is an exclusive for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players. On November 30, players will be able to download the DLC for free. You can download the DLC from the play store, or initiate the download from within the game itself. Either way, you'll need to access the game through a PlayStation console to be able to play as Spider-Man.

We do hope that the Spider-Man DLC will eventually make its way to Xbox Series X and Xbox One and PC players. But for now, it's sadly just exclusively available for PlayStation players. Perhaps the DLC can be released eventually as paid DLC content? That way, PlayStation players still got a better deal as they got Spidey for free, while others got him late and for a fee. But the worst thing that SQUARE ENIX and Crystal Dynamics can do here is to develop future DLCs specifically for Microsoft players. This will just further divide the community and leave a very bad taste in everyone's mouths.
