The Bucs won a game on Sunday that can only be described as a roller coaster of emotions. They defeated the Colts, 38-31, on the road following a 10-point deficit a halftime and a furious comeback in the second half.

Backed by five turnovers from the defense and the offense going 4-of-5 in the red zone, the Bucs scored late on Leonard Fournette’s fourth touchdown of the game and held on at the end, following a long kick return by the Colts to claim the win and improve their record to 8-3 on the season.

Here were the most disappointing players from a wild game.

CB Sean Murphy-Bunting

It was evident that the Colts wanted to pick on Murphy-Bunting, especially in the first half. A majority of the passes thrown by Carson Wentz were going towards his side of the field and there wasn’t much that Murphy-Bunting could do. He missed tackles, got called for a pass interference penalty that set up a score, and he was also beat deep on a 62-yard touchdown pass by Ashton Dulin. The Bucs needed Murphy-Bunting to step it up when Jamel Dean exited the game, but he didn’t. Murphy-Bunting finished with five tackles and two passes defensed in the game.

WR Chris Godwin

Surprisingly it was a quiet game for Godwin, who is normally the most consistent out of the Bucs receivers. He had a crucial fumble early on that led to the Colts’ first touchdown. He wasn’t involved much in the offense until later on and even then didn’t have as much of a stamp on the game as other players did. Godwin made four catches for 24 yards with a fumble and had one rush for three yards.

DC Todd Bowles

A lot of the blame can go on the players for underperforming, but there’s a certain part of it that falls on Bowles. Time and time again the Bucs played soft zone coverage that left Colts players wide open over the middle and down the field. There were so many instances where the Bucs would win on first down and then allow egregiously long third down conversions. It occurred multiple times on third-and-long, as well as a mind numbing third-and-15. Bowles didn’t adjust his game plan, and still gave too many snaps to players that aren’t making an impact, such as Jason Pierre-Paul.

Not only were there huge let downs on third-and-longs, but Bowles constantly drops back defensive linemen way too often in coverage. Putting Anthony Nelson in coverage directly led to a Jack Doyle touchdown, and there were other moments when Pierre-Paul and Cam Gill dropped back when it seemed unnecessary. Having your defensive lineman in coverage has not helped the Bucs get stops. Pewter Report’s Scott Reynolds put it best with this tweet during the game:

 Bucs’ Missed Tackles

There were many issues with the Bucs’ defense on Sunday and tackling was another one. While they did a solid job of bottling up Jonathan Taylor, there were too many missed tackles on dump off passes and other situations. Multiple players had missed tackles and it started to directly cause the Colts to score. Take for example Dulin’s 62-yard bomb – Murphy-Bunting and Lavonte David missed tackles on first down to set up a second-and-short.

Vita Vea then missed a tackle on Taylor to give the Colts a first down instead of third-and-short. The next play was the touchdown on a play action. If either of those three missed tackles are made, you’re looking at a third down where a different play could be called instead of the Colts taking a shot on first down. The Bucs’ coaching staff has talked all season long about cleaning up the missed tackles and they’ve yet to do so this far into the schedule.

WR Mike Evans

Much like Godwin, it was a quiet game for Evans as well. He had an opportunity to make a touchdown reception in the fourth quarter to put the Bucs up potentially by 11, but it went off his hands for an incompletion. Granted, the ball was tipped on the play, but Evans is considered one of the best receivers in the NFL and should have made the catch. He had three receptions for 16 yards on the afternoon.
