Words of Grace

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

There are many things going on in the world. Some of the things are important, and some of the things are not important.

Someone has said that we sometimes miss our opportunities in life because we concentrate on the trivial and neglect the most important things.

Jay Peden remembers a sermon he heard when he was in college. A preacher by the name of Dr. Jordan spoke on the subject “Majoring on Minors. “He has since forgotten much of that sermon, but that expressive title has stuck with him all these years.

Peden observes many who go through life majoring on minors. They go after the minor trivial things and neglect the major things that are most important.

The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. David said, in Psalm 27:4 “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that I will seek after.” He kept the main thing the main thing.

Paul said, in Philippians 3:13 “This one thing I do.” He kept the main, thing the main thing.

The Apostle Paul often referred to himself as a servant of the Lord. Writing to servants in Ephesians 6:5, he encouraged them to serve in singleness of heart. He also used the same words in Colossians 3:22.

The one thing is to stay focused on the Lord.” A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways” (James 1:8).
