Chicago White Sox: Avisail Garcia has a new MLB home

The Chicago White Sox are still looking for a right fielder. They have some options internally that could play the position on a part-time basis but it would be nice to find someone who could fill in full time. Their lineup is so close to being nine hitters deep and that is one of the keys this offseason. One option, Avisail Garcia, is off to his new MLB home.

It came out on Sunday night that Garcia is in agreement to go to the Miami Marlins on a four-year deal worth 53 million dollars. That is a very nice contract for him as the Marlins look to add some veteran depth to their squad.

Of course, Garcia was with the White Sox back in the day. In fact, his final season with the team was probably the last time that they had a consistent right fielder. He has become a very good Major League Baseball player since his departure which is why he earned this contract.

In 2021, Avi had a really nice year. He slashed .262/.330/.490 for an OPS of .820. He hit 29 home runs and had 86 RBIs, 68 runs scored, and eight stolen bases. All of this accumulated a WAR of 2.9 which is pretty good for a depth veteran. He is going to help the young Marlins team take a step forward.

The Marlins were the surprise team of the 60-game 2020 season as they made the playoffs and upset the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the postseason. Following that, they were back to being a below-average team in 2021. Now, they might spend a little bit of money to try and be better in 2022.

Garcia was one of many big deals signed on Sunday. The signing wasn’t long after it came out that Marcus Semien was going to the Texas Rangers. The White Sox would have loved to add him as well but it won’t be. Instead, they need to continue being active on the market and see who they can get.

Avi was a great player in his time with the White Sox but he was often hurt. It was good, however, to see him have a nice career once he left town. Now it is fair to hope that he continues being a productive player in Miami. It is even more fair to hope that the White Sox are still able to grab a really good free agent or two ahead of December 1st.
