While Max and Helen are following their joy, another New Amsterdam couple is in the throes of heartache.
In this Tuesday’s fall finale, Leyla confronted her girlfriend, Dr. Lauren Bloom, about the fact that she made a sizable donation to the hospital, paving the way for the creation of a fifth residency slot for Leyla. Lauren argued that she wanted to give Leyla the opportunity that she deserved while trying to keep them together. But Leyla didn’t see it that way.
“You didn’t do this for us. You did this for yourself,” Leyla replied. When Lauren said she loves her, Leyla responded, “No, you tried to own me. You bought me. That’s not love.” With that, she walked away.
“We hated to do it. We hated writing it. We hated filming it,” executive producer David Schulner admits to TVLine. “We love them together. But Bloom needed to pay the consequences for doing something behind Leyla’s back [which was] morally questionable. So we had to give Bloom her comeuppance. None of us liked what we had to do, but it’s what Bloom deserved, unfortunately.”
When the series returns on Tuesday, Jan. 4, Lauren and Leyla will not be in any better of a place. “Their situation becomes so much more complicated now that this is out,” Schulner previews, “and going forward, it takes some pretty unexpected turns that both bring them together and pull them apart, simultaneously. So it’s a really incredible ride.”
While the dissolution of Lauren and Leyla’s relationship hasn’t been an easy thing to write or watch, Schulner is quick to praise star Janet Montgomery, who “knocks it out of the park” as Lauren Bloom, the EP raves. “Janet brings such vulnerability to Bloom that we haven’t seen in a really long time, if ever — the kind of depth of despair and vulnerability.”
New Amsterdam fans, what are your hopes for Lauren and Leyla? Hit the comments with your thoughts!
Good. Hopefully this means Leyla will leave right along with the new director.
THIS!!!!
I am looking forward how they will resolve their issue. I want Leyla to stay since she is a doctor with skills and care for the patient. I just wonder how things will play out once they return
What a joke. First of all, Bloom evened the playing field. If Layla was white and from the UK or France she would have been matched at NA or anywhere she wanted. But because she was from Pakistan she was discriminated against and they didn’t even consider her file.
.
Second, trying to own her? If she said I will give you a nice place to live and buy your way to your dream job in exchange for sex, that is trying to own her. Getting her a job she is very qualified for (overly qualified actually,) to keep her career on track and not force her to move away is not ownership. The very act of not telling her gives her the freedom to make choices including breaking up with Bloom if that’s what she wants.
.
Third, what in gods name is Layla doing bringing it up at work and then storming off at the end. Instead of inferring motives and being dismissive of Bloom why not sit down in private and talk it out until both parties have said their piece. Bloom does so much for her and she repays her at the first sign of trouble not just with a breakup but with an accusation of being everything she hates. This was poorly written and cannot be properly defended by the show runners.
.
As for being morally questionable, this stuff happens all the time. Look at the college admissions scandal. This is less egregious because a spot was created instead of stolen, yet Bloom is punished and not the guy who solicited the bribe?
Morally questionable does not mean something is right.
The fact that it’s “questionable” indicates ambiguity meaning it’s not inherently wrong either.
Agreed
I agree with you. She created a new spot which did not take anything away from another applicant. And it was a spot she was more than qualified for. Everyone takes advantage of who they know to get an opportunity to get a position. The college admission scandal is completely different – those people were not qualified for the spots they bought and faked being athletes while taking spots from qualified candidates. Bloom should not have kept it a secret and that’s the only thing she is guilty of doing.
I disagree. If Bloom tells her then she is using her money and power to gain an advantage over her. In other words, I just spent 90K to buy you something that keeps you with me. Instead she told her two half truths that actually accomplish the opposite of what Layla was complaining about. 1, She earned it on her own (in a non racist non biased system she gets the job on her merit because A, she is damn good, and B she has more than enough practical experience in her home country.) 2, Bloom didn’t pull strings and use her privilege to help Layla. Instead she took a massive personal and professional risk. She could lose her job, her license, her freedom, and she did it for love. She did it because she couldn’t imagine losing Layla and any risk seemed worth it. How is that a bad thing for Layla? What would you do for the person you loved most in the world and saw a very real future with?
Overall I agree with your points about the donation leveling the playing field and her fear but take pause with the way you seem to be very angry with Leyla. She is understandably angry and hurt. Their relationship, putting the secret aside, has been shown as very supportive and honest. Realizing the person you’ve trusted after taking so long to lower your guard hasn’t been honest isn’t easy. I think this is Leyla’s initial reaction and there is more to hear from both of them.
That’s a fair point. But, it also speaks to my point about not bringing it up at work. This is a conversation that should be had in private and with a genuine intent to stay calm and communicate. It flies in the face of all they established over the relationship.
.
As for being hurt, the lie is the only way this works without dooming the relationship. The feeling of obligation and ownership only applies when the action is revealed. Bloom telling her she will pay 90K so Leyla doesn’t have to leave is one more debt Leyla feels toward Bloom. But not telling her let’s things develop organically. If Leyla decides she wants to break up she is in no way obligated because of the 90K or the risks associated with it. Now there should be at least some question of obligation. As for the response in the other thread about Leyla being manipulated away from a place where she was wanted and valued, NA has been very good to her. It’s true that her relationship has complicated matters for her a bit, but overall they respect what she brings to the table and now she has an opportunity with General Surgery. This just feels like a made up problem rather than legit drama.
I agree it’s definitely drama for drama’s sake especially since they have been shown as communicating very well and resolving issues. And your comments about why it was best for Lauren not to tell her totally makes sense. Lauren was never trying to control or use wield it over Leyla. It’s been fascinating to see so many reactions thinking it was an obsessive power play. It’s the kind of choice that Lauren would have taken to her death bed if the situation allowed.
While I agree totally, this most affects Leyla most I don’t get the impression that the show is going to show the immigrant doctor who wasn’t fairly considered take her things and go somewhere else. Of course Floyd’s offer could be a red herring but like you said and we could all see she’s more than qualified. She deserved that NA spot and should stay. That said, TV shows very rarely commit to recurring characters. As much as I think Leyla is really Lauren’s person and her match I am keeping some space for the show to go the lame route and write the character off or offscreen.
Thanks for sharing your perspective.
I agree with you, for the most part. How long and how smoothly Bloom lied is my main concern. Leyla asked her point blank if she was involved and that was the moment she should have confessed. Bloom was able to justify what she did because she knew Leyla deserved the residency and sincerely wanted Leyla to exist freely in the relationship without thinking something was owed between them but she didn’t let Leyla decide for herself if the donation was how she wanted to begin her career and she knew how Leyla would feel about something like this. It also wasn’t a decision made wholly out of her indignation at Leyla being unfairly rejected. Bloom was very afraid of being left behind and didn’t think for one second about how they could have made a long distance relationship work. She is in love, but also has slightly unhealthy attachment issues. These things are always easy enough to identify and work out on tv and I think this secret being out might finally force her to be honest about that. The donation isn’t something illegal or something Bloom would ever want repaid, but it’s much grander than the other things she did to help, of which Leyla was aware. I think Leyla has every right to be angry and there will be conflicting emotions as she makes sense of what she’s just found out and wonders what else is being kept from her.
But you’re very right in saying that this feels like drama for dramassake. Their meeting and subsequent romantic story was intriguing and something I hadn’t yet seen on tv so I was looking forward to where things would go, however, the writers decided on trite dramatics (not for them only, I feel that way about most of this season’s plots) that leaned heavily into soap opera theatrics. I still like them together and think with some time and a calmer conversation where both parties are listening to the other in good faith, perhaps they’ll be able to understand where the other is coming from and if not get back together, at least be friends. I quite like Leyla and I think they should set her up in General Surgery with Dr. Floyd; they work very well together and I would rather watch him perform exciting surgeries than be subjected to that tiresome relationship he’s in.
I hope they are able to work this out. I like them together.
Good. Never liked their relationship. Hoping Dr Reynolds’ relationship is next to end .Don’t like that one either.
Totally agree. I think the best way to salvage the whole Reynolds triangle is to introduce a 3rd man. Now that would be something we haven’t seen on tv before. At least that would be interesting.
I want them to get back together…so they need to get brought back together..again and NOT pulled apart for a 3rd time hehe…also I loved Shiva’s portrayal of Leyla’s emotions in that last scene…the 2nd no conveyed her devastation at thinking Bloom doesn’t love her after all ( we know she DOES)…..It will be a long, hard road but ultimately Leyla needs to see that Lauren truly grasps what she did, why it made Leyla leave, how it made Leyla FEEL & that Lauren DOES love her. She needs to see that Lauren is/has worked on herself before she can even contemplate just talking to her again, let alone trying to salvage their relationship.
I hope they can talk and fix their realtion, at the end its human to make mistakes even this one.
“You got me a well paying job with good benefits that will allow me to go anywhere I want in the world while commanding a high salary for the rest of my life! That’s unforgiveable!” This storyline is so dumb.
It was no doubt a bad choice by Bloom, but I don’t understand why it’s being blown up as big as it is. And they’re acting like Leyla leaving is punishment to Lauren, when that seems like a much greater punishment to Leyla. Why does she have to suffer more for this storyline? Lauren loses a girlfriend while Leyla loses everything.
The writers are selfish for throwing her under the bus to teach Bloom a lesson. This storyline is silly to begin with, but Leyla is not the one who should be losing here.
It’s the norm. Whenever there is an LGBTQ relationship on a series the writers always find a way to end it even if the couple is married. There is never a happy ending. Prime example is Callie and Arizona on Grey’s Anatomy. It happens every time.
I like these two together they show everyone how much they care for each other but at the same time I thought she was been blackmailed into giving the money to the hospital
I love them together. Maybe eventually can bring them back together.
We love the stories you bring to us each week with these amazingly talented actors we just don’t want anyone of them to be written off the show
What Lauren deserves is happiness. Hope this two can work things out.
I loved this show in Season 1. What happened?! I’m sad about how heavy-handed and obvious the storylines have gotten. So many of my favorite characters are gone and this show has become unwatchable. What a waste.
I totally agree, season one was great!!! So many shows have become unwatchable.
Think Leyla and Bloom had to air this issue but I believe they will come back to each other .
Love these characters in this show
I’m glad they’re apart. It was way too gushy! I want Max back! The show will be no good without him and I hate the new woman who took his place.
I have no problems with same-sex couples, but I never really felt the chemistry between these two. I like each character, but honestly I think they’d be better apart. Just my 2 cents.
My hope is that the story line will involve the relationship struggling, that it will take a real course that will certainly involve pain, but that there will be learning and that they will somehow manage to pull it out. In the end, there has to be some greater equality between the two — Somehow Leyla has to achieve more power in the relationship.
This reply implies that Lauren is using power over Leyla. From everything that has been shown of their relationship since S3, Lauren never tried to control or wield power over her.
It’s really sad that so many viewers prioritize finance over the emotional connection between them. Lauren is never going to escape her wealth unless she gives it all away. Since season 1, the character has been shown as not caring about her wealth and as we can see from how she lives it’s not important. Leyla has just as much equity when you consider their emotional connection.
Not happy at all Max is leaving he Is why I watch this show
They work through it. They are so good together.
Lauren n Leyla should separate but can remain friends.
I don’t like gay scenes n they disgust n put me off whenever they come up. It is therefore a welcome relief to see them break. Hopefully, Lauren can go back to being straight.
(I wish the psychiatrist can just be fired or be replaced by a straight person)
I’m sorry but being a homophobe is so 19th century. Get in the game. It’s the 21st century my love. We are all human with feelings. Doesn’t matter what gender a person is love is love. Gays hurt jst as much as straight people. I’m a proud lesbian and don’t care what any1 say. Stop being hateful coz you jst hurting yourself. The hatred you feel for gay and lesbians is for you to feel good about yourself. Get over it cos lesbian characters on television are her to stay baby😃😃😃
I agree that Lauren had it coming. Lauren lied to Leyla’s face when Leyla asked Lauren “Did you have anything to do with it?” Meaning, off course her residence slot. Having said that, they do make a wonderful couple and both women have gone through a lot of drama in their lives. I hope after some soul searching, the writers figure out how to bring them back together.
I want someone a little more exciting and feisty for Lauren.
I know what “Lauren” dit was so wrong, but she loved “Layla” so much. We do stupid things when we in love. So I would really LOVE it if Lauren and Layla made there way back to each other. I want them to get back together. Lauren regretted what she dit. Let’s not punish her anymore pls😭😭😭
I want Layla to come back but in a great way. I want Laurel to see what she has done. No don’t turn to drugs but do something for other nurses or residency from other countries and while she is doing that she Layla and the talk but there are more fights but they rekindle their relationship.
