There is probably a way to put this in a more delicate manner, but the king has fallen. The 2022 Ram 1500 just dethroned the Toyota Tundra. The Ram 1500 is now seen as more reliable than the 2022 Toyota Tundra, which is a massive change.

The 2022 Ram 1500 may have caused an upset. It seems like for decades the Toyota Tundra has been the reigning champion of reliability. Various reports and lists ranked the Tundra as the most reliable option.

In fact, the Tundra has a reputation for lasting forever. It makes reaching 300,000 miles seem like child’s play. So, being taken down by the Ram 1500 is a significant shock. But the 2022 Toyota Tundra did this to itself.

Why is the 2022 Ram more reliable?

Consumer Reports recently released its predicted reliability rankings for 2022. The 2022 Toyota Tundra has a predicted reliability ranking of three out of five, which is average. The 2022 Ram 1500 has a predicted ranking of three out of five too.

But the Ram 1500 overtook the Toyota Tundra because the Tundra just had a massive redesign and redesigns can hurt reliability. There are new parts and engines that haven’t been put through the paces yet.

It’s possible that the new generation of the Tundra could have more problems. But we will see how it performs once it hits the streets. Meanwhile, the Ram 1500 has been proving itself since it was redesigned for 2019.

Also, here is the Consumer Reports full-size truck reliably rankings:

  • Ram 1500
  • Toyota Tundra
  • Ford F-150
  • Nissan Titan
  • GMC Sierra 1500
  • Chevy Silverado 1500
  • Ram 1500 Classic

Consumer Reports uses member surveys to determine reliability rankings. Over 300,000 responses allow CR to collect detailed information as people list the problems they faced with their trucks.

It’s not too concerning that the Toyota Tundra dropped one spot. It’s still in second place, making it one of the more reliable trucks available. Honestly, with Stellantis’s reputation for low-reliability rankings, it’s surprising that the 2022 Ram 1500 claimed the top spot.

Trucks don’t compare as easily as apples to apples. The 2022 Ram 1500 and 2022 Toyota Tundra are both great options that fill individual needs. The Tundra starts at $37,645, and the Ram 1500 begins at $34,400.

The Ram 1500 has four engine options that range in hp from 260 to 702. The Ram 1500 TRX is the 702 hp beast, and a diesel engine is available. The Tundra has a gas-powered engine with 379 hp and a hybrid setup that provides 437 hp.

When properly equipped, the Toyota Tundra can tow up to 12,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,940 lbs. The Ram 1500 can tow up to 12,750 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,320 lbs.

So, while the Ram 1500 is more reliable and stronger, the Toyota Tundra has a fresh redesign with a hybrid powertrain. We recommend giving both options a test drive before picking one. We will keep you updated about how these trucks compare as we learn more.
