Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes excited to see Sporting KC in MLS Cup playoffs

While football season is on hold for the Kansas City Chiefs during their bye week, it appears that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is focused on the fate of the local soccer team Sporting Kansas City as they prepare for the semifinals of the 2021 MLS Cup playoffs. As a member of the team’s ownership group, Mahomes is invested both financially and emotionally in the outcome of Sporting KC’s season, and he’s expected to be in attendance for their matchup against Real Salt Lake on Sunday.

Check out this tweet where he says he “Can’t wait” to see his team compete for their first divisional cup championship since 2013:

Mahomes is turning into something of a magnate in the field of soccer ownership, with his investment in Sporting KC and fiancee Brittany Matthews’ investment in the NWSL team recently renamed the Kansas City Current. Both teams have seen their share of success since Mahomes became part of the equation, and hopes are high that his involvement will help turn the city into something of a mecca for midwestern soccer.

While his ownership experience is still in its infancy, Mahomes has laid a foundation that should make him an excellent executive for any team when it comes time to retire at the end of his football career. He owns a minority stake in the Royals, which will surely expand his purview in the ownership space over the course of the next several years.

But gridiron football remains his main passion, and despite a short break from practice over the holiday bye-week, Mahomes is still laser-focused on the task of bringing the Chiefs to another Super Bowl in February. Soccer seems to be a budding interest for the young quarterback, but as the 500-million dollar face of Kansas City’s most successful sports franchise, his role as an elite signal-caller remains paramount to his goals off the field as well as on.

If he can help any of the city’s professional teams with his championship pedigree, though, fans will certainly hold his legacy in high esteem, if they don’t already.
