CCSD Prepares For Employee Vaccine Mandate As OSHA Waits For Federal Court’s Ruling

Administrators with the Carroll Community School District (CCSD) say they are waiting for more information on a proposed Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rule that would require employees to be vaccinated for COVID-19. That regulation, which is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 4, is currently being challenged in the U.S. 6th District Court of Appeals. The rule applies to employers with 100 or more employees, and Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, notes the district clearly exceeds that cutoff by a large margin, and they are consulting with the district’s attorney for guidance.

Under the rule, employees who choose not to be vaccinated would have to be tested for the virus on a weekly basis. Berlau says many questions still remain there, as well

While the rule may be on hold for now, he notes they are preparing for implementation if it passes legal muster. According to Berlau, the majority of staff have already received at least one shot, and he is not aware of any employees who have expressed concern over the rule if it were to be enforced. He says COVID activity in the district was very low as of Nov. 15.

The board did not take formal action on the issue during their November meeting, but they may be forced to convene in a special session to implement policies depending on how the courts rule.
